my loving wife bought me both the friends ep and la cucaracha for Xmas
she is great

where do members of this tribe fall on those two albums? I like them overall, but they make me feel conflicted. On the other hand, that conflicted feeling was the very reason my roommates and I used to have the pod, pure guava and godweensatan in the multi-cd player on shuffle and repeat for days, weeks, months, our entire sophomore year...

the friends ep is more consistent, but it isn't as cool as la cucaracha, it's more sort of got this trendy gay german discotheque feel, no really I heard a voice in the background counting "ein, svei, trei..." So if I ever go to a gay German dance club, they better freaking play "friends" while I'm there or i'll start a brawl.

but since the chances against that are astronomical...

the first half of la cucaracha is awesome. the mariachi rocker on the first track, the blue balloon, the trippier-and-slightly-less-dance-club version of friends, all the way through the fruit man which has that sort of pretending-to-be-jamaican pure guava feel. then spirit walker, what is that shit??? it's all new age with no edge. a little bit new age with an edge I can take, like some of the stuff on Quebec, but i think spirit walker is the new song I will skip every time it starts. there's some ok stuff after that, it's all over the place; for example, just the one song "woman and man" is all over the place: the beginning sounds like it should have been rehearsed some more, then the drum jam is cool and the band comes in to save the song. final track "your party" i do like but I really wish he had at least made the chorus rhyme!!!

there's my roll up, what do all the rest of y'all think?

+ sound of urchin

Got to see these cats at the Seattle club El Corazon near the end of their west coast tour.

Crescent Moon is Dave from Ween plus Tomato from Sound of Urchin/ Moistboyz on drums. Dave sings and plays bass, Tomato sticks to the drums, with the occasional backing vocals. This is approximately the same set up that Dave played in his previous band, Instant Death, which has opened for Sound of Urchin and played some of those Moistboyz led benefit shows for Claude when he was in his accident. As I was talking to Dave when he was here for Moistboyz he told me that his friend and drummer from that band had died, so it was defunct. As sad as that is, it's good to see Dave moving on. He's a hell of a bassist, and works very well with Tomato. Tomato, for his part is one hell of a hard rock drummer. When he's with Sound of Urchin, he also sings, and in a way, that's a detriment to the band, since he does simplify his drum lines in order to cover lead vox. Without having to worry about covering anything other than the occasional lead vocal, Tomato can really rip off some interesting licks. In crescent moon, Dave plays the bass more like a guitar, playing a lot of chords-- not appregios, which a lot of bassists play, but strummed out chords. The only person I can think of that strums bass that much is Lemmy. Dave isn't doing it to get a fatter bottom end, as I assume Lemmy does, but he's getting the melody out of the strumming, and will take solos. The songs were heavy pop songs that had a good ear for a hook. My only complaint was that Dave's vocals were a little buried, and they were pretty good. It was an intersting and entertaining, and very unique take on a two man show. The highlight for me was a cover of Pink Floyd's "fearless" that was dedicated to the old hippies in the audience that might recognize it. The hypnotic chord structure of that song played right into the sound that Dave was pulling off, and it came out as something I called "swamp metal". Dave seemed to like that description. It fit his whole sound, but that song in particular. Earthy, sludgy fun. Seahag from Urchin sat in on one song and that was a pretty sweet blues jam.

Sound of Urchin have two members in Moistboyz, the aforementioned Tomato and Rev. B-ill on second guitar. They are filled out with "doodoo" on bass and "seahag" on guitar. Bill is an excellent guitarist from a pretty traditional blues metal sort of background. Likes big fat chords and solos based on blues scales. Seahag also plays in "project object" a Zappa cover band, and that goes along way to telling you the approach that he takes on his instrument. Seahag and Bill split lead guitar duties, sometimes from song to song, sometimes within the same song. No slight on Bill, but Seahag's solo style has that prog rock "where did that come from" vibe to it that I just love. And I think the man may have six fingers.

Urchin play one of the more ween inspired mixes of genre bending pop with a metal side to it. think God Ween Satan. Lyrics tend towards the funny, and even though there were like 35 of us at El Corazon, the motherfuckers played a solid hour and a half set to rock the crowd. They have a couple of discs out, but I've yet to see one that captures the intensity and heavy sound of the live show. The discs tend to be cleaned up and polished, and that's fine too, but until they cut a live or live in studio disc, they're selling themselves a little short on the albums. I've mentioned that Tomato simplifies the drum lines a little when he sings. For this show, the equipment./merchandise manager got behind the kit for a few songs so that Tomato could sing. He's not quite the same drummer, but is pretty damn decent, and it does show that Tomato realizes that he is better when he isn't splitting duties. I'd rather that they found a new singer and left Tomato behind the kit, but it seems to be mainly his band.

Ah well, it was a hell of a show. One of the smaller turnouts for a Urchin show in Seattle, but it was also a Wednesday.

So, tune in, and get weirded out! ;) 12-4p PST...we'll see how long I actually stay on the mic tho! ;)
In any case, I got a notice from a friend on Monday that Sound of Urchin was playing a show that night at the Rainbow, a beautiful and tiny little club near the UW in Seattle. The openers were the local supergroup Master Musicians of Bukkake. I went for the master musicians, as I know a couple of them and really enjoy their playing. The crowd was kind of a who's who of the freak rock scene in seattle, including most of Very Special Forces, seattle's late, great Boognish inspired freak rock band.

Master musicians put on a hell of a show. Not really in the ween vein, other than occasionally ripping guitar, but they were actually blown away by Sound of Urchin. These kids channel the Boognish pretty hardcore, and their guitarist Revernd B. Ill, is actually from new hope. The influence is right out on the sleeve, right down to a Van Halen cover song (Runnin' with the devil rather than Hot for Teacher).

Tomato is a 40ish guy who looks like a younger, coked up bruce dern. he plays drums, sings, and writes the songs. The aforementioned Rev. B. Ill plays guitar from a pretty standard blues/metal/funk base. he's a fat guy with a beard. looks like he could be in Gov't mule. Doo Doo on bass looked pretty conserviave, like Mike Mills, but had good technique. The star of the band was Seahag, who's also in the Zappa cover band Project/Object. Sehag can really rip up the guitar. he looks like a cross between deaner and Kirk Hammet. While B. Ill was a fine guitarist, he looked like he was working hard. Seahag has that effortless control of the guitar, like Deaner or hammet. His solos tended to throw those prog rock touches into them.

The songs they played certainly followed the plan of most ween songs. tight power pop, funk, and speed metal. They didn't play any obvious genre songs like Blarney Stone. Tomato doesn't have the vox of gener. he's a hell of a drummer, but while he's singing, the drum lines are simpler.

The songwriting and musicianship are the real strong points to this band. good hooks, and while they didn't have Gener's versitile vocals, they did have a two lead guitar attack. And unlike Judas Priest, which features two leads that play very similar styles, the juxtaposition of the two styles really led to something special. Doo Doo and Tomato really play well together.

I bought the latest CD, The Diamond, and it's pretty good, but it just doesn't capture the live band. you can say the same about Ween, of course, but Ween's CDs are usually great things in their own right. I think the difference is in the vocals. On The Diamond, Tomato's vocals are cleaned up and out front in the mix. live, the music overwhelms the vocals, which were buried a bit in the mix. and it's the music that draws me to the band.

The CD is pretty good, worth picking up, surely, but I wouldn't be nearly as enthusiastic about the band if I hadn't seen them live.

It was a monday at the rainbow, and 70% of the crowd was just there to see Master Musicians. There were maybe 50 people there tops. a lot of people left, and continued to leave as the show went on. Sound of Urchin played a two hour set. But the people there got more and more enthused, so that there was a core of about 10 people right up front, maybe another 10 scarttered around the bar. rocking hard. these guys gave it up for a miniscule crowd. I wish it was a friday, where no matter who's at the Rainbow, there's a big walk in crowd from the Blue Moon next door and the univeristy a mile away. They would have racked up a lot of fans.

There was a definite theme to the show: cocaine. Tomato bemoaned the lack of coke trails on the urinals at the rainbow. then said "Millpede" was about doing too much coke, "alligator" about buying coke, and "swamp alligator" about buying coke, then doing too much of it. Tomato was a nice guy and very friendly after the show. But if he was that energetic on stage, I'm not sure I'd want to see him coked up. Freak time!

Anyhow, I had a great time, and you should check them out live. their website, www.soundofurchin.com, has live soundclips.

Yet, they aren't just a ween rip off. They ta

OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: Ween's MidWest Tour Cancelled

Regretfully, we must announce that Ween's upcoming tour of the Midwest has
been cancelled.

There is a problem within the band, that requires an immediate
intervention, for the health, welfare and safety of one of its members. For this
member, years of touring have taken their toll.

This is very sad, of course...but if something is NOT done now...the
consequences could be even more dire than the cancellation of these dates.

We know that this will be very hard for everyone to accept...and it was an
incredibly difficult decision for the band to come to, but it is necessary
and important.

Please forgive us. Know that this was not done lightly...that it is an
ABSOLUTE necessity.

Ween will come back stronger and they will reschedule these dates at their
earliest possible opportunity.

We thank you for your understanding...we understand your disappointment.
We appreciate your support.

All tickets will be refunded and we'll post that information as soon as
possible.

Around noon I said fuck it and made the hour and a half drive up there. The ticket window was run by a couple of old ladies. no wonder we couldn't get through. I got row X (with A being front) in the center. Could have got about 10th row off to Glenn side, and that would have worked on Deaner side, but no thanks. I can sit back a little. Especially after checking out the Mt. Baker theater in person. it's a nice place.

The seattle show is at a small club that maybe holds 600 people. it's now Neumo's. Back in the day, it was Moe's. (get it?). I've seen some fuckin' great shows at Moe's. Flaming lips on the Clouds taste metallic and Transmissions tours. Mercury Rev on the See you on the other side and deserter's songs tours. Soul Coughing just when Irresistable Bliss came out. Ween got too big for that place between Chocolate and Cheese (the 400 person Crocidile Cafe) and the country tour (sold out the 1000 person Showbox).

So what the hell is Ween doing playing there? an invite only Speakeasy gig. If you woke up before dawn a couple of weeks ago, you could get on a list and they send you a confirmation number so you can get in. Also if you pleged a lot of money in the latest pledge drive through KEXP, you had a shot at a ticket. Speakeasy.org is trying to promote their ISP service.

But for a couple of weeks after the tickets for Bellingham and Eugene went on sale, no one knew how to get in. it was the crazy hot potato item of the seattle music community. how the hell to get into the show. I'm sure that the people who work at Neumo's got plenty of free sex. Hell, I'm not gay and I would have swallowed load after bouncer load to get in.

As it turns out, I got an email ticket I don't completely trust. Shamus is a nickname and they're comparing IDs. I have business cards with Shamus on them. Maybe that'll work. Friends got in through KEXP. Should be a great, but packed, show.

The bellingham show is sunday. I'm taking monday off. Then monday night for Seattle. I'm taking tuesday off. And I barely got those two days off, so no to Eugene.

So hey, where should I go pre-funk before the Bellingham show?
