your thoughts: friends ep and la cucaracha?

my loving wife bought me both the friends ep and la cucaracha for Xmas
she is great

where do members of this tribe fall on those two albums? I like them overall, but they make me feel conflicted. On the other hand, that conflicted feeling was the very reason my roommates and I used to have the pod, pure guava and godweensatan in the multi-cd player on shuffle and repeat for days, weeks, months, our entire sophomore year...

the friends ep is more consistent, but it isn't as cool as la cucaracha, it's more sort of got this trendy gay german discotheque feel, no really I heard a voice in the background counting "ein, svei, trei..." So if I ever go to a gay German dance club, they better freaking play "friends" while I'm there or i'll start a brawl.

but since the chances against that are astronomical...

the first half of la cucaracha is awesome. the mariachi rocker on the first track, the blue balloon, the trippier-and-slightly-less-dance-club version of friends, all the way through the fruit man which has that sort of pretending-to-be-jamaican pure guava feel. then spirit walker, what is that shit??? it's all new age with no edge. a little bit new age with an edge I can take, like some of the stuff on Quebec, but i think spirit walker is the new song I will skip every time it starts. there's some ok stuff after that, it's all over the place; for example, just the one song "woman and man" is all over the place: the beginning sounds like it should have been rehearsed some more, then the drum jam is cool and the band comes in to save the song. final track "your party" i do like but I really wish he had at least made the chorus rhyme!!!

there's my roll up, what do all the rest of y'all think?

I did not have an easy time getting into Cucaracha. I knew I loved Quebec on first listen, but this one took me a lot of listens to truly appreciate and there are still some songs on there that I can completely do without, particularly Friends and Spirit Walker. With My Own Two Hands is classic Deaner and I love it. Fish Man sounds like it could have been on The Mollusk. I really like Woman and Man from start to finish. The intro with the jazz flute is so silly, and then it just rocks out with a great 70's groove and ridiculous lyrics sung so seriously. Your Party cracks me up.

My favorite tune on the Friends EP is Light Me Up. It just rocks with kind of an 80's Miami Latino feel to it.

Spiritwalker is, unfortunately, the worst song ween has ever written. i've seen it preformed live twice and it is no better. as silly as shamemaker is, the live version plays. but they nixed both of these numbers for the Honolulu show, a four hour set, and played woman and man, object, your party, fiesta and the crowd favorite, with my own bare hands- which was an energetic, crazy sing along. it was amazing to me how well these new songs have incorporated themselves into the live show. seamless, i shall say. and the show was highlighted with a 33 minute version of I'll Be Your Johnny On The Spot and a Drifter in THe Dark with a couple of GEner solos on the harmonica, not to mention a foray into God/Ween/Satan with Nan, Tick, I Gots a weasel, the going gets tough from the get go, old queen cole and you fucked up.
The Freinds EP is sick. Friends is hilarious and the other four are solid even if underrated tunes. King Billy is my favorite. i think they played all these songs, save for Friends, at the Warfield in SF in October. THey thought it was pretty funny to play Slow Down BOy in SF.

I'm happy to say that as time has gone on, la cucaracha has remained in my cd player for the long haul and the more i hear it the more i dig it. "Object" in particular tends to get stuck in my head, over and over for weeks as I talk to people and go grocery shopping I hear gener singing "You're just a piece of meat, and I am a butcher..."

It has really made my life more fulfilling.

Friends though, I have come to the conclusion that just because I love ween does not mean i have to listen to the ep on repeat. I'll be sure to bust it out next time I host a dance party...
