Tenacious D

While I like some Tenacious D stuff, for the most part I hear them and I think, Ween was first, Ween is better, and Tenacious D is just a poor rip-off of Ween.

Am I the only one?

I'm not a huge Tenacious D fan, but I liked Jack Black on Mr. Show. And I agree that Ween is better.

But was Ween really first? If so, what were they first in?

Zappa mixed in humor, satire, and genre-hopping music way before Ween. And I've read interviews with Ween that talked about the influence that Butthole Surfers had on them. They were in high school when they got to open for the Surfers. Even before Zappa, you can go back to Ernie Kovaks, who blended humor with pop music of the day. Or in the 70s, Steve Goodman. they Might be Giants predated Ween. But Zappa is the one guy who most embodies the Ween spirit, whether you like his music or not..

Ween is my favorite band, don't get me wrong. There's a lot of Zappa I don't like that much, some that's pretty good. But I don't think that Ween was "first" in anything, or that Tenacious D was a poor imitation of them. Ween has their thing going. Tenacious D has their thing going. The influences seem to overlap, but I can't imagine that Ween is as into Dio as Tenacious D. Ween is part of a history of very talented charlatans in rock. Tenacious D is in a similar vein, perhaps not as talented, and not so much to my taste, but they aren't rip offs.

Theoretically you can go back to when music was invented to find satirical, genre-hopping music. I'm just saying that TD is IMO less talented and original than Ween. Ween IMO is more talented and original than TD. And to illustrate my point and the reason why I'm comparing the two in the first place is because the satire and genre-hopping is worse in the two-person TD than it is in the two-person Ween. Let's look at the comparison: a two-person band, with similar sound and humor...satirical...genre-hopping...which one was first? Not to go back to caveman days but Ween was in existence before Tenacious D. And therefore I think TD ripped off of Ween.

Yeah, well I got to see Ween in person on Monday night in Atlanta. And they didn't mention Tenacious D at all.

Two different critters as far as I'm concerned. TD is more deliberate and outright with their satire and humor. Ween integrates their humor and commentary into their music without trying to make the music their punch line. TD rocks, I love their sound, and I can't wait to see them live one day. But to compare them to Ween is like comparing Phish to the Grateful Dead.

          Andrew,

Why would Ween mention Tenacious D?

Okay, two person, genre-hopping, humorous music, without going to the caveman days: They might be giants had videos on MTV when Deaner and Gener were in high school. TMBG used to use the DAT in live shows just like the way Ween started out. If anything, TMBG has been more "original" about their music throughout their careers. They've never done such obvious tribute songs like Ween's "don't get 2 close 2 my fantasy" or "tear for eddie", but have always mixed an original curry of musical styles. "absolutely bill's mood" on the first TMBG album would be right at home, sung by Gener, on the Pod. "touch my tooter" could be on an early TMBG album.

Is Ween a ripoff of TMBG? Just because TMBG was first?. Nope, I don't think so. I think they just come from the same school of thought, which is to have fun with music.

But hey, I don't think the number of people in the band should make a difference, I was just using TMBG because you specified a two person. genre-hoping band, and they were just before Ween, and popular. It's a silly restriction. Musically, Ween owed more to the butthole surfers and Zappa than TMBG., beyond all the serious bands that they include into their sound. "awesome sound" could fit right in on "psychic, powerless. . . another man's sac", and so could many early ween songs.

Here in seattle, the local paper, The Stranger, has a music editor that hates Ween (Kathleen Wilson) and they never miss an opportunity to call Ween a ripoff band who don't have an original idea. So I'm a little sensitive to the "ripoff" label.

My point would be that just because you have influences that you show on your sleeve, like Ween does, it doesn't make you a ripoff. There are other bands that I've heard that owe more of their sound to Ween than Tenacious D. Sound of Urchin is one, Seattle's own Very Special Forces was another. They weren't ripoffs, they were just Ween lovers who took that influence and put their own spin on it. And were/are damn good at it. Tenacious D clearly love the grandiose metal of say, Maiden and Dio, a lot more than Ween, and they may have enjoyed their Ween coming up, but it hardly seems like they're riding on ween's coat tails. they have their own thing going.
